PAPER: Awareness On Green Solid Waste Management Through 3R Based Approach

Abstract: Unplanned Solid Waste Management (SWM) with ignorance of landfill physical condition will lead to negative impact on the environment, human social life and the entire of ecosystem. Urbanization is the key factor to increase the solid waste generation especially in cities. Most of the landfill site is no longer operating with actual functions and becoming dump site. Initiatives and various programs of Reduce, Reuse and Recycle (3Rs’s) that has been introduced by Government since 1993, yet no positive changes happen. Recycling rate of this country is still far behind compare to other developed nations with just at 5% which is very alarming. It shows that the major problem is the lack of recycling activities which will increase the amount of solid waste generated daily. Disclosure 3R’s approach shall be strengthen further towards the government, public and the concessionaire appointed to manage solid waste to increase awareness of the 3R’s importance in SWM. Authors carry this study by implementing 3R’s approaches as the main focus and narrowed down the awareness of three main entities in the SWM which is government, concessionaire and public on the importance of the 3Rs in the SWM towards a green waste management. . The aim of this study is to see how far the awareness of government, concessionaire and public on the importance of the 3R’s approach in SWM based on the initiative and involvement. Authors will look at the correlation between awareness, knowledge and involvement / action. Authors adopted the case study method and Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur (KL) as the study area based on urbanization factor that influence the amount of solid waste generation. To strengthen the study, authors used interviews technique for government (PPSPP, JSPN and DBKL) and private concessionaires (Alam Flora Sdn Bhd and Southern Waste Management Sdn Bhd) and the data were analyzed as qualitative analysis by using the software of Atlas.ti and the results presented in the form of descriptive (Descriptive Method). The second techniques used was the distribution of questionnaires to people in the study area and the data was analyzed by analytical Comparison using SPSS software and the results presented in figures. The expectation of result towards the end of the study is to come out with rational recommendations of the best practice and method to use in enhancing awareness of the importance 3R’s approach in SWM.
