Abstract: Since the past few years, sustainability certification has been utilized as an instrumental tool for natural environment protection by the tourism industry in developed nations. In Malaysia, it is still newly introduced and has not been widely practiced especially for scaling up the small scale tourism development. Thus, a research was undertaken to examine the potential application of sustainability certification towards sustainable development of small scale tourism in the country. This paper discusses the approach, challenges and constraints in relation to sustainability certification development and implementation as well as factors which define its success. The implementation framework is also proposed using Pulau Perhentian Kechil as the model.
